Type 11 digits and the generator calculates the 12th (check digit), or paste all 12. For UPC-E, choose it in the format list.

UPC-A is the product barcode of the United States and Canada. It has 12 digits: the first 11 identify the company and the product, and the last one is the check digit.
UPC-E is the compressed version, with 8 digits, for small packages. It only exists for UPC-A numbers with zeros in certain positions, because the compression works by dropping those zeros.
| UPC-A | UPC-E | EAN-13 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digits | 12 | 8 | 13 |
| Origin | US and Canada | US and Canada (small packages) | Rest of the world |
| Relation to EAN-13 | EAN-13 with a leading 0 | Compressed form of a UPC-A |
Every UPC-A is an EAN-13 that starts with zero: 036000291452 as a UPC-A is the same product as 0036000291452 as an EAN-13.
This page draws the barcode for a number you already have. It does not assign UPC numbers. To sell in US retail or on Amazon, the number must come from GS1 US, which licenses a company prefix or single GTINs to your brand.
Amazon checks product UPCs against the GS1 database, so numbers bought from resellers or made up can get listings rejected. Generate the barcode here after you have your GS1 number, or for internal use such as testing a scanner or a point-of-sale setup.
Selling outside North America? Most retailers and Amazon also accept EAN-13, and every UPC-A converts to EAN-13 with a leading zero.
UPC-A has 12 digits and is the standard in the US and Canada. EAN-13 has 13 and is the standard in the rest of the world. Every UPC-A becomes an EAN-13 by adding a leading zero, and current scanners read both.
Type the first 11 digits and the generator calculates the 12th. If you type all 12, it checks whether the check digit is right. The math is the GS1 modulo 10: digits in odd positions count three times.
You can generate a barcode for any valid number, and it will scan. But for retail and Amazon the number must be licensed from GS1 US, or the listing can be rejected. Made-up numbers are fine for internal use and testing.
On very small packages sold in the US and Canada. UPC-E only exists for UPC-A numbers with zeros in the positions the compression drops, so not every UPC-A has a UPC-E version.
Yes. Add a zero in front of the 12 UPC-A digits; the check digit stays the same. The converter on this page does that and the reverse, for EAN-13 codes starting with 0.
Every UPC-A becomes an EAN-13 by adding a leading zero, and every EAN-13 that starts with 0 is a UPC-A.
